Accountant - Charlotte, NC

Interested in an opportunity with a leading non-profit organization in North Carolina? Alexander Youth Network is seeking an experienced Accountant to join our Accounting team. Qualified applicants should meet the following criteria: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business; 3-5 years of related experience preferred; proficiency in MS Office applications; knowledge of MS Dynamics specifically Great Plains (GP) preferred.


Assists in ensuring accuracy and timeliness of accounting records and financial reporting, monitoring the financial condition and financial activities of the organization.  Adheres to and enforces internal Departmental and Agency policies and procedures.  Provides back-up support to the Director of Accounting and Accountant.  Assists with leading, training and engagement of the Accounting Team. 


Leads planning and coordinating efforts for all contract and grant related audits (e.g. NCDPI, DPI, Mecklenburg County)

Review contract and grant invoices, assigned Accounts Payable and Accounting items for accuracy and submit for final review according to established schedule.

Prepares NCDPI claims, determines client eligibility for meals and updates files accordingly.  Submits for final approval according to established schedule.

Maintain schedule of temporarily restricted grants, with monthly updates for releases and new grant activity.  Ensures YTD invoice submission does not exceed the maximum allowable contract amount.

Creation and maintenance of performance manuals with step by step instruction for completing key job components.

Update Accounting documents (e.g. check request form, credit card expense reports) with new general ledger accounts and Departments, and save files in the appropriate location or forward to assigned Staff for inclusion on Agency sites (e.g. check request form – e3)

Setup AP Vendors, electronically file W9's and complete ACH/EFT requests for Advancement or Billing

Provide support to various areas of the organization, working collaboratively with Departments to resolve concerns or offer guidance.

Reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts according to established schedule.

Month-end-closing duties completed according to established schedule. (e.g. journal entries, bank account reconciliations, Advancement recons, internal Grant reporting)

Review Agency purpose and GL account coding for Agency credit card expense reporting, and update spreadsheet accordingly.  Ensure GL account coding aligns with account code descriptions and notify Cardholder of any disparities.  Submit for final review according to established schedule.

Assists in year-end preparation of audit schedules, and submits for final review according to established schedule.

Completes all mandated training (e.g. Relias Learning)

Identifies and participates in professional development opportunities pertinent to position, that promotes performance improvement (e.g. Relias elective courses, Webinars, seminars)

Attendance:  Has minimal occurrences of non-urgent unscheduled absences.  PTO requests should be submitted 5 business days in advance of leave.

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance preferred; Master's highly preferred.  Proven track record of success within this field.

Experience in healthcare preferred; advanced MS Excel and Microsoft GP Dynamics skills; able to execute work with a high standard of accuracy and precision; highly organized; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to think creatively, highly self-motivated; able to roll-up sleeves and work with team members in a hands-on management capacity.
