What you would do:

Alexander Youth Network is seeking for a 2nd shift (3pm-11pm) Licensed Recreation Therapist to join our team in our Residential Treatment Center (RTC). Experience with child and adolescent population preferred.

The Recreation Therapist will develop and carry out recreation therapy for persons with serious emotional and behavioral problems while coordinating with individual service plans, to enhance their kinesthetic, visual-motor, musical, inter-personal and intra-personal skills, as well as naturalist learning processes, and their ability to utilize community resources and support.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES. Others duties may be assigned.

  • Completes documentation timely and accurately
  • Provides quality services in accordance with NMT model and agency policies
  • Maintains the milieu environment in a neat and orderly manner conducive to treatment and incompliance with safety, health, and infection control policies as evidenced by EOC inspections
  • Participates in clinical staffing.
  • Adheres to TCI protocols for restrictive interventions (RIs)
  • Completes assessment and discharge paperwork in a thorough and timely manner
  • Plans and facilitates therapeutic activities that are appropriate for the individuals of the group based on developmental level, diagnosis, and other external factors
  • Applies knowledge of child growth and development 
  • Staff meets and maintains the requirements of certification and licensing boards in order to remain in compliance and maintain
  • Attendance:  Has minimal occurrences of unscheduled absences or lateness
  • Completes all mandated training

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

Graduation from a 4-year college or university with a degree in Recreational Therapy required.  Will consider 4-year college degree in recreation administration, park and recreation, outdoor recreation, special education, elementary dance education, elementary music education and other related education degrees.  Minimum of 2 years of mental health experience required.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of therapeutic recreation theory, principles, techniques, and physical education methods, along with their specific implications and application to individuals with developmental disabilities and mental illness with an emphasis on reintegrating into their community.  Knowledge of the characteristics and etiology of developmental disabilities and mental illness and various medical conditions and of their implications for physical education services.

Ability to evaluate the client's present level of fitness, recreation and community functioning and progress and determine needed services and supports.  Ability to keep accurate work records and reports, which demonstrate the quality and quantity of, provided services.  Ability to articulate the philosophy, goals and strategies of physical education and recreation therapy.  Ability to administer a variety of TR assessments and interpret results and incorporate into service plan.  Ability to problem solve in a positive manner and work creatively and effectively with a variety of consumers to find solutions.  Ability to train, direct support staff and natural support resources.  Knowledge of adaptation and assistive devises needed by persons with disabilities.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, families and the general public.  Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. 

Must be able to prioritize work demands, creatively meet client, agency and community needs and serve as a member of numerous teams/groups.

Licensure or Certification: 

Certification by the Department of Public Instruction of North Carolina in Recreation Therapy or a related field, or be eligible for licensure.  Valid NC or SC Drivers License.
